Many of us never think about what happens to soldier’s beloved pets when the owner gets deployed. I must admit, although I am married to a veteran who spent 20 years in the US Army, the thought about soldiers pets never crossed my mind. Maybe because we were always fortunate that I was capable caring for our pets when my husband was in foreign counties fighting for his country and freedom for all US citizens. My wake-up call came a few days ago when I heard about the organization “Guardian Angels For Soldiers“. This nonprofit organization finds foster homes for Soldiers pets while they are deployed. I think everyone who wants to live in peace in this United States should in some way participate and support this group of volunteers in their efforts making a soldiers life less miserable. Just imagine you would have to leave your pet behind. How much better is it to know your pet is taken care of and you can re-unite once you return back home.
It made mine! It’s a while that the movie theater has been packed with people and we all shared tons of goods laughs and everyone was heartbroken at the end when Marely’s time came to walk over the Rainbow Bridge.
Did anyone else go? How did you like it?

As the economy weakens and home foreclosures force families to seek new living situations, many cats and dogs are being left behind. the ASPCA estimates the current housing crisis has put 3 to 4 million pets at risk for abandonment. Animals arriving at shelters these days aren’t cute little puppies, but older family pets that can no longer be supported. There are great benefits to bringing home an older dog that should not be overlooked. While puppies are certainly cute and cuddly, they are babies and have a lot to learn. An older dog may have already been potty trained and may have nice house manners. We got our Barley when he was a year old. He was already trained and we didn’t have to go through the chewy puppy phase with him Local shelters and animal rescues are running at full capacity. If you are considering adding a new furry family member please consider a rescue. Petfinder Atlanta area
Studies show that companionship of a pet can increase the quality of life for people especially for people with disabilities or illness, or those with little contact with others. Some families can no longer afford to feed themselves and their pets. They may feel they need to give up their pets because they can not care for them. Daffy’s Pet Soup Kitchen was established by SOS Club, a licensed, non- profit coorporation in Georgia, as a pet food bank and a pet assistance program for Georgia serving the Gwinnett and surrounding counties in hopes of keeping families together. The Purrfect Nanny would like you to know that during this time of need, rather than sending out Holiday Cards, we have made a donation to Save The Horses. Find out more about this rescue group by visiting www.savethehorses.org. We hope the coming year brings much prosperity and joy to everyone!
As you make your New Year’s resolutions, consider injecting a bit of horse sense into your life. Horses have a sophisticated, yet straight-forward way of dealing with change. Humans have much to learn from these animals: their responses to stressful situations and their immense capacity for joy. The following elements of horse wisdom can easily be translated into advice for dealing more constructively with the people in your life. May you experience much joy, balance and success in 2009!
In our search for the perfect dog for our family, we came across a wonderful rescue organization for “doodles”: poodle mixes. The International Doodle Owner’s Group (IDOG) Rescues and Rehome Resources is run entirely by unpaid volunteers! IDOG works to inform potential owners about the ins and outs of becoming a “doodle” parent. They work with shelters around the country through a network of transportation and foster voluteers. IDOG has an excellent application and screening process to pair up families with their perfect match!
I immediately signed up as a transportation volunteer and soon after as a foster. Memorial Day 2007 weekend came our first opportunity to be foster parents. Continue Reading »
By now, almost everyone knows that President Elect Barack Obama and his family will be welcoming a new member to their family as they enter the White House. Much has been made about which breed or non breed they might choose and that Malia, the ten year old Obama daughter, has animal allergies which may limit breeds which might be suitable for their family.
Our own family faced similar limitations when we decided to add a furry member to our household. Our daughter had expressed her desire for a dog since she began speaking, but her severe allergies really made it seem like an impossibility. Continue Reading »
